The game starts with Vito and his best friend Joe Barbaro being caught during a robbery on a jewellery store. Faced with the choice of prison or the Army, Vito enlists into the Army and takes part in Operation Husky, freeing Sicily with the help of Don Calo, the resident Mafia boss. In 1945, he gets injured and transfers back to Empire Bay, managing to avoid having to go back thanks to forged release papers provided by Joe's friend Giuseppe.
